Lecture: LMR 356  1 pm -2 pm

Differential and precision GPS Surveying for sub-meter and centimeter accuracy.

 

Field Lab Schedule and Outline:

Differential and precision GPS Surveying for sub-meter and centimeter accuracy.

Location: Rancho San Rafael Park, northwest corner of northern baseball complex parking lot.

 

Students are responsible for bringing the following items:

Field Attire:

Wear appropriate clothing, shoes and hat for fieldwork at Rancho San Rafael Park. Expect mud.

Bring light rain protection. We will proceed to field if only light rain is indicated. Backpack recommended.:

Field instruments

Field note book or clipboard and note paper/ Mechanical or sharpened pencils.

2:10p (sharp)- Field Vehicle Departs –

-Meet at usual location in parking lot east of LMR Geology building

2:20p (10 min) Arrive in RSR Baseball Complex Parking Lot:

           

            Please form into two groups. (Group 1 should have only 4 students)

 

Activity 1 (100 min) Dual frequency GPS for cm accuracy - Dr. Gary Oppliger

            Group 2  begins at 2:25 pm

Group 1 begins at  3:00 pm.  See Dr. Gary Oppliger for introduction

 

Activity Outline:

-Part 1 Introduction to Dual frequency GPS surveying procedures (35 minutes)

 

-Part 2 Survey four GPS control points.  (65 minutes)

        - Team members rotate to allow each member to setup and operate the GPS system

        - Acquire five-eight minutes of GPS observations at each location.

 

Activity 2  (35 minutes) Trimble GeoExplorer - Mr. Jim Scott

            Single Frequency Differential Carrier Phase field methods for sub-meter accuracy

Group 1 begins at 2:25 pm  - when completed return to activity 1 part 1 until 4:40 pm

Group 2 begins at 3:00 pm  - when completed return to activity 1 part 2 until 4:40 pm

Jim Scott has to leave RSR for campus at 3:40 pm.

 

            Activity Outline:

            -Trimble GeoExplorer demo and operation instruction

  

4:40 (20 min) Return Equipment to Truck / Travel to Campus

5:00 Arrive back on campus
